Born 1951 in St. Gallen. He studied art history and art education and co-founded the art cinema KinoK in St. Gallen. From 1986, Liechti worked as a freelance writer, director, cameraman, and producer. He was a visiting professor at several film academies and gave master classes worldwide. His work was screened internationally in numerous retrospectives. He was awarded the European film prize in 2009 for The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy. In 2010, Liechti received the Grosser Kulturpreis of the City of St. Gallen as well as the Art Prize of the City of Zurich. In March 2014, his film Vaters Garten – Die Liebe meiner Eltern was awarded the Swiss film prize for the best documentary and the best editing. Peter Liechti died in Zurich on April 4, 2014 after a prolonged illness.
